Go Skateboarding Day

June 21 is Go Skateboarding Day, an annual event that promotes and celebrates Skateboarding as a sport, culture and way of life. It started in California in 2004 and June 21 was selected as it is longest day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Once viewed as a deviant subculture, Skateboarding has emerged to become one of the more dominant cultural forces in modern society with major influences in music, fashion and art. In 2016, the IOC announced that skateboarding, once a counter-culture sport, will be added to the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The appeal of skateboarding is an interesting one. As a subculture, skaters value creativity, risk and freedom which is counter to most organised sports where there are referees, penalties and set plays with the goal of trying to win. Within skateboarding comes the space to make decisions, challenge oneself and not having to abide by strict guidelines about what is acceptable or how to be successful.

CHPLCO (pronounced Chapel Co), a home-grown Singapore skate brand was founded on these same principles; if Skateboarding is the modern religion in which art and culture can flourish, Chapel Co is a space that brings together these like-minded people to help unleash their creativity, talent and self expression. This same ethos is shared by us at Freshly Pressed and our sock collaboration comes in the form of a perfect pair of skate socks which features the white CHPLCO branding on the heel alongside their classic C logo on top.

Even if you don’t skate, these socks are made out of thick combed Terry cotton that provides added cushioning and comfort which makes it the best pair of socks you can wear for any sports activity (as we’ve been told by many of our customers) and even casually for that low-key streetwear vibe.
